Osseo defeated visiting Maple Grove 48-23 in Northwest Suburban Conference wrestling Jan. 11. With the victory, the Orioles brought home the coveted Ken Droegemueller Cup, named after their late Hall of Fame coach.

The Orioles were determined to bring home the cup after the Crimson had won it for several seasons. They took an early lead and never trailed.

Connor Spanier of Osseo edged Caden Klopfenstein of MG 5-2 at 106 and freshman John Lundstrom pinned MG’s Eddie Kilgard 113 to put Osseo up 9-0.

Maple Grove’s Dylan Schultz pinned Kelvin Phonhnotha at 120 to make it 9-6 but Osseo senior Rufus Summerville answered with a win by fall over Quinten Kolness at 126 to put Osseo up 15-6.

The Crimson responded at 132 when Max Johnson decisioned Oriole captain Jack White 8-5. The match went back-and-forth for the next few weight classes. At 138, Osseo’s Thomas Cornell pinned Marvis Stevens, David Grant of MG decisioned Jack Cornell 4-2 at 145 and Crimson sixth-ranked ace Gavin Peterson pinned Kaden LaCombe 152.

Leading 21-18, the Orioles got some breathing room when Vincent Tolena edged MG’s Sam Quiroz 6-5 at 160 and Aiden Wayne cradled and pinned MG’s Draven Craidon at 170.

The match was still up for grabs when Osseo’s eighth-ranked Jacob Meissner took to the mat against MG’s Johan Rodvik at 182. The Oriole captain promptly won by fall, giving Osseo a commanding 36-18 lead.

Maple Grove star Evan Hull, ranked sixth in the state, kept Crimson hopes alive with a technical fall victory (17-1) over Connor Wayne at 195. Wayne lost the match but his ability to avoid the fall clinched the meet as Osseo had an insurmountable 36-23 lead with two matches left.

With an overjoyed Osseo crowd and bench looking on, 10th-ranked 220 pounder Jagger Schack scored a quick pin over MG’s Bryce Tiber and Isaac Omland capped the meet with a fall over Westyn Doubler at 285.
